TON 618 was catalogued in 1957, in a survey of faint blue objects photographed at the Tonantzintla Observatory in Puebla, Mexico — the “TON” is Tonantzintla, and 618 is simply its number in the catalogue. It looked like an unremarkable star. It was later identified as a quasar: the luminous core of a distant galaxy, shining because matter is falling into the black hole at its center.

The black hole powering TON 618 is one of the most massive ever measured — estimates run to tens of billions of solar masses, a class astronomers call ultramassive. Its event horizon would swallow the entire solar system many times over. The quasar it powers is among the most luminous objects known, radiating with the brightness of trillions of suns. The light in our sky tonight left it more than ten billion years ago.
